Title: Archiving the Grateful Dead Audiovisual Collection
Abstract: The Grateful Dead’s audiovisual collection consists of approximately 15,000 audio tapes in all formats from 1965-2005, 3,000 video tapes in all formats from 1971-2005, and 250,000 feet of 16mm film. These are almost entirely live recordings, with some studio material mixed in. Since the end of the Grateful Dead’s touring career in 1995, the band has kept its legacy alive by releasing live recordings, both on CD and DVD, drawn exclusively from this
extensive archive. David Lemieux, who worked as the Grateful Dead’s archivist and producer from 1999 to 2006 in Marin County, California, and still works closely with the band members and their record company, will discuss the band’s archiving philosophy and the processes in place to preserve this important collection.
About the Speaker: Since 1999, David Lemieux has been working as the Grateful Dead’s audiovisual archivist and producer. Prior to this, David worked at the BC Archives in Victoria as the audiovisual technician, and the National Archives of Canada, where he did an extensive internship in the film conservation division and worked on the development of a nitrate film storage facility. He received his MA in film archiving from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England in 1999, as well as a BFA in film studies from Concordia University in Montreal, and a BA in history from Carleton University in Ottawa. He currently lives in
Victoria, BC, with his cat, Zeus.
Light refreshments will be served.
For information please contact the series organizer,Dr. Francesca Marini (fmarini@interchange.ubc.ca).
Thanks Rick.
Finally, Rod is coming across the pond from Jolly Old England to Mission. He's looking for a banjo teacher in the area. Who knows who's out there?
Cheers,
Garry
