Happy New Year to all. May 2008 find your instrument always in tune and your voice high and lonesome (well, I can hope!).
Here's your PBHS Beacon for January. Thanks Kate, another fine monthly news release!
Get down to the Anza for Sue Malcolm and Friends at the Slow Pitch Jam, Mon Jan 7, first of the year! What a great way to work on the resolution to sharpen up your picking or bowing!
And Mon Jan 14, take in the Ergonomics Workshop by Barb Picton, learn to play pain-free. (If your an athlete, you might benefit even if you don't pick.)
News of the Valley Bluegrass Music Assoc and Rogue Folk in the Beacon as well.
Contra Dance with the Sybarites Sat Jan 5, Laura Love on Sat Jan 12 at St James, check out www.roguefolk.bc.ca
Sun Jan 6, 2:30, take in In the Pines for 1.5 hours of old-time music presented by the SOB. Thanks Paul. Tune in to In The Pines this Sunday, January 6th as the Stern Old Bachelor of the Airwaves aka Jim Burnett presents a selection of live recordings made in the 60s. The Friends of Old Time Music in NYC presented the likes of the Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass boys, Roscoe Holcolmb, Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson and many more fine Country artists, some for the first time in the North. Hear the live concerts on this Sunday's broadcast on Vancouver Co-op Radio from 2:30 to 4 PM at 102.7 FM, at coopradio.org on the web, or on a variety of cable frequencies throughout B.C. A special added feature will be a selection from Mississippi fiddler HOYT MING AND HIS PEP STEPPERS, last month's draw from the 40 card set "Pioneers of Country Music".
(And while I'm plugging fave radio, get up bright and early Tuesday morn' for Pacific Picking with Arthur and Andrea, fm101.9, www.citr.ca/first.php)
Thanks Jay for news of Bill Evans and Megan Lynch in Bellingham Sun and Mon Jan 20 -21.
Sunday, January 20: Bellingham, WA, in concert at Nancy's Farm, 2030 E. Smith Road, 98226. Showtime is 2 p.m. Suggested donation $8 to $12. For further information, phone 360-966-4640. Reservations recommended.
Monday, January 21: Bellingham, WA, Working Up Banjo Solos workshop, 7 to 9:30 p.m. $40. Contact Len Helfgott at 360-647-0203 or email to leonard.helfgott@wwu.edu for registration, directions and additional info. For high beginners to advanced students.
Who are Bill Evans & Megan Lynch? World-renowned California bluegrass banjo player and Banjo For Dummies author Bill Evans (Dry Branch Fire Squad, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Tony Trischka) and six-time National champion fiddler Megan Lynch (3 Fox Drive, Jim Hurst, Chris Stuart & Backcountry) blend tradition and innovation, mixing original instrumentals from Bill’s Native and Fine and Plays Banjo CDs with creative interpretations of modern tunes and a few well-chosen standards. Fast banjo and fiddle duets? Most definitely! But you’ll also be surprised at how well these celebrated side persons and teachers blend their voices on bluegrass, folk and swing material from such diverse sources as Rose Maddox, Ralph Stanley, Van Morrison and John Gorka.
Both Megan and Bill are much in-demand teachers, having taught at the American Banjo Camp, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and the British Columbia Bluegrass Workshop, to name just a few! Bill has written a popular instructional column for "Banjo Newsletter" magazine for the last twenty years and hosts three popular instructional DVDs for Acutab Publications. He is also the author of the Mel Bay book "Parking Lot Picker's Songbook." For info on Bill, visit www.nativeandfine.com. For Megan, visit www.fiddlestar.com.
What else? Thanks Ray for news of a new jam venue in Victoria. See the poster. (I would have picked George as the banjo picker.)
