What a weekend coming up.
But first, apologies to those who suffered from Gord Askey's huge file size on his poster, some folks have trouble compressing. I'll compress a few of his mando strings in return, next time I see him.
But second, anybody heading for Surrey Mem' Hospital, drop in and cheer up Stan Hasslet from Vanderhoof. Stan has been around Bluegrass for many years. If you know him and want to stop by, call the Hospital first as he may still be in Intensive Care.
Mark O'Connor at the Chan Sat Nov 17. For those who have held off, see attachment for 10% discount. Certainly the Swing event of the year, maybe the acoustic event of the year.
Little Mountain Band at the Montmarte Cafe on Main, Sat Nov 17. Around 9:00 pm I think.
Ferreras, Machado and Reischman at Firehall No. 13, Sat Nov 17, 2:30 performance. See attachment. This will be a great show. I don't think they all, or even any two of 'em, perform together very often so don't miss the show.
Further afield on Sat Nov 17, the Lakeside Ramblers CD release show in Prince George, 7:00 pm. See attachment.
Rogue Folk, www.roguefolk.bc.ca/index.html brings you Headwater Fri Nov 16, SONiA & disappear fear Sat Nov 17, John Doyle and Liz Carroll Sun Nov 18. Does Steve get any sleep on weekends like this? Maybe after his "Edge on Folk" show on CiTR, UBC radio, Saturday morning. www.citr.ca/first.php
The Vancouver East Cultural Crawl is one of the great cultural events in Vancouver and it's happening this weekend, mostly at 1000 Parker Street. The Courageous Mountain Rangers will be performing in Studio 334 at 1000 Parker on Friday night, Nov 16. The music will begin around 7:00 pm. The Courageous Mountain Rangers are Jeff Heintzman on banjo and guitar, Larry Cosulich - bass; Mike Grenzer - mandolin; Donald MacPherson - fiddle; Randy Goulding - Guitar. All of them sing. With over 170 years of collective musical experience it's easy to see why these guys are .... well, so old. Courageous Mountain Rangers, come see them before they're dead.
Sunday evening Nov 18, The Still Blue are in concert at the Valley Bluegrass Music Society, Elks Hall in downtown Aldergrove.
Tues Nov 20, Moira Smiley & VOCO, the Vancouver debut of LA’s stunning post-folk band
“...a truly phenomenal act. Their body percussion sets are a sight to behold.” (Folkworks Magazine)
Heritage Hall | 3102 Main Street (at East 15th Avenue)
Intense physicality and unrivaled spirit describes LA’s rebellious post-folk quintet Moira Smiley & VOCO. From the wildly energetic dance songs of Eastern Europe to the stark and beautiful folk melodies of Appalachia, their music sparkles with originality and precision, combining body percussion, banjo, cello, clarinet, accordion and hauntingly beautiful vocal harmonies. Tradition collides with experimentation when they make their Vancouver debut for Music on Main with a programme of traditional and original repertoire alongside stunning new arrangements of Bela Bartók’s Mikrokosmos.
$20 tickets ($15 for students) at Tickets Tonight or at the door.

Thanks David.
Hot off the e-press, there will be another fabulous Moveable Music Coffeehouse on Saturday, November 24th. As always, we’ll be at the Friends Meeting House, 1090 West 70th, one block west of Oak Street. Everything starts at 8 pm. This time, there won’t be a feature act. Instead, we’ll have many wonderful performers, including Kathy Francis, Andrea Smith, Sue Turner, Stoo Born, Linda Villarreal, Michael Dunn, Jean Strachan, and Joyce Chocholacek. You can expect to hear everything from folk to ragtime blues to swing and original songs. Admission is by $5 donation, which goes to the Moveable Music School scholarship fund to help musicians who can’t afford the full cost of courses. Thanks Rosemary.
What else? Looking for the words to Squirrels are Evil? Right at www.youtube.com/user/DebbiLynnSalmonsen
What else? Not quite acoustic music in the normal sense but so what? The musical Annie runs at the Shadbolt Theater in Burnaby in Deer Lake from November 9-24th with 8pm evening performances nightly except for Monday and Tuesdays. Matinees are at 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Call ticketmaster for tickets which are $26 for adults, $16 for over 65. It was a hit on opening night and a delight to hear and see. The ticketmaster number is 604-205-3000. And watch for Gerry Marsden and Maurice Hudon in the show.
What else? Allan Sayers from Prince George will be looking for a ride back to Vancouver after the Portland RiverCity Festival. He's got one way (south) covered with George Garbutt, but GG is dumping Allan and hightailing to the warmth of Arizona afterward so Allan needs to get back to Vancouver. Contact George at gwg@mag-net.com
I guess George feels ever so slightly guilty and so is looking for help on Allan's behalf.
More? Plan way ahead to Feb 21 (that would be '08) when Ron Roth will be presenting Cadillac Sky. See attachment. These guys are so hot they're back to Wintergrass for the 2nd year in a row. Thanks Ron.
Cheers,
Garry
