But first! Your November Beacon. Excellent as always Katie. Thanks Archie for memories of Verne; he kind of disappeared from around here, left some of us wondering what happened. He was definitely one of a kind. I didn't hear until Chilliwack.
Monday night Nov 5 is Slow Pitch night at your Anza club, with Sue Malcolm and band.
A great concert Monday Nov 12 (at St. James Hall on W10th), David Parmley and Continental Divide. Including Ron Spears, he of the soaring voice; Dale Perry who I first saw on bass with David's first band, the Bluegrass Cardinals; Jimmie Cameron; and Billy Hurt Jr. on fiddle.
Sunday Nov 12 is jam night at the Valley Bluegrass Music Association. Address in the Beacon.
What else?
Thurs Nov 1, Laurie Lewis et al in Qualicum, see earlier email.
Fri Nov 2, don't miss Redgrass and their CD launch at RIME on Commercial Drive. Excellent harmonies, wonderful musicians.
If you're interior-bound this weekend, catch Rossetta Paxton's CD release party in Williams Lake on Sat Nov 3.. www.rossetta.org

Saturday November 10th at Celtic Woolens, the Streels who sing and play a fun variety of Celtic and " Newfie " songs and tunes. They will be joined by Cary Grigg a great fiddle player and BC fiddle champion.
The Streels: A 'streel' is a slovenly person in Newfie-speak, but there's nothing shabby about this east-coast-on-the-west-coast quartet of virtuoso musicians, who sing and play an eclectic repertoire of original, maritime, and celtic tunes. Their arrangements are fresh and innovative; their harmonies are seamless and tight. This is Great Big Sea with side-clutching stage banter and infectious energy.
Doors open at 7:15pm and the concert starts at 8:00pm; Admission $12.00; Phone for reservations to help us plan. 604-222-2299; Thank you, Michael and Lynn
PS The Friday Sessions (every Friday ) at the store are running and start at 8:00pm.
Imagined Worlds: the Music of Trichy Sankaran
Saturday, November 10, 2007, 8pm; Vancouver Community College Auditorium, 1155 East Broadway at Glen Drive, (Auditorium entrance from Glen Drive). Tickets: $15 or $10 seniors and students [No ticketmaster charges]; Call: 604-871-7271.
On Saturday night, November 10, 2007, a concert highlighting the inter-cultural works of Canadian composer Trichy Sankaran will take place at Vancouver Community College Auditorium. The composer himself will be the featured performer, as many of the works include the mrdangam and the kanjira, the South Indian instruments upon which Professor Sankaran is a virtuoso. The roster is comprised of a veritable who's-who of west coast world music percussionists, including: Sal Ferreras, Pepe Danza, Boris Sichon, Niel Golden, and Jonathan Bernard. The concert ensemble consists of longstanding members of the VICO, both classical and jazz players, as follows: Piano - Paul Plimley; Clarinet – AK Coope; Flute - Mark MacGregor; Violin - Susan Cosco; Viola - Henry Lee; Cello - Finn Manniche; Double Bass – Paul Blaney. Apart from the works of Prof Sankaran, the concert will include a work for tabla and inter-cultural ensemble by VICO composer Niel Golden. Trichy Sankaran is a musical treasure in Canada, and no less internationally. This is a golden opportunity to hear a true master of rhythm in concert.

Go to Africa this Remembrance Day long weekend - without leaving town! Make trails on Sunday, November 11th, to a South African dance party with the UMOJA 5-Star Band at the WISE Hall.
The electric band (OK, it's not acoustic; but when it's music you can't sit down to, word is worth spreading!) from Umoja – the high voltage music-and-dance spectacle currently at the Vogue Theatre - performs a mix of jazz, funk, pop, reggae, and above all mbaqanga - the bouncy township-jive of Soweto. Amazing local marimba and percussion ensemble Kutapira will play the opening set, and DJ Nils - of Beats without Borders - spins hot African discs later. With Monday a holiday, the dance-floor will quake 'til late. The evening may be a wrap-party for Umoja's superb dancers and musicians, as their last scheduled show in Vancouver is that same afternoon. Not to be missed. The WISE Hall, is at 1882 Adanac, East Van.
Music 9 p.m. - doors 8.30 pm – Nov 11. Advance tickets $18 at Highlife Records (1317 Commercial Dr. 604 251 6964), or online at www.roguefolk.bc.ca check out:www.umojatheshow.com
Sat Nov 17, the Firehall Concert Series presents what must be Vancouver's multicultural-musicians-group-to-die-for: John Reischman, Celso Machado and Salvador Ferreras. Also Sat Nov 17, Little Mountain Band at the Montmarte on Main. See the Beacon.
Also Sat Nov 17, Mark O'Connor at the Chan with his swing band.
Did I mention Rafe Stefanini, Bruce Molsky? See the Beacon.
