Lots happening.
Friday, October 26 Bent Nails, a wonderful band from Vancouver, is featured at the Crossroads Coffeehouse. They play original as well as cover tunes. This group’s repertoire consists of quirky blend of blues, roots and country. They’ve been known to also wonder into Motown, swing and jug band territory. Their sound has been described as Buddy Miller meets Dave Edmunds with the Wailin’ Jennys – with sweet harmonies, wailing guitars and mellow harmonica. Their high energy performance will leave you wanting more. If any of you would like to be open stage musicians, please email Mark, mark_kozina@telus.net to reserve a spot on the Open Stage. Take care everyone and we’ll see you on Friday at 7:00 for doors opening and 7:30 for the Open Stage. The Coffeehouse is at the Gathering Place – 2253 Leigh Square, Port Coquitlam (just behind the Dairy Queen on Saughnessy Street). Look forward to seeing you on Friday. Thanks Mark.
Fri Oct 26, Joey Only at the Radio Station Cafe, Hastings and Columbia (must be mighty close to our favourite co-op radio station!) where the documentary, no, it's a folkumentary, no it's a travel diary, "No Glamrock Country Star" will also be aired. Then Wed Oct 31 at the Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir.
Sat Oct 27, your PBHS and Rogue Folk co-present The Breakmen, with special guests Ivan Rosenberg and Chris Jones. Full details in your October Beacon, or check out www.roguefolk.bc.ca/concerts/thebreakmen.html or www.pacificbluegrass.bc.ca/calendar.shtml
Ivan and Chris are presenting workshops on dobro (or resophonic guitar) and real, honest guitar, respectively, on Saturday afternoon. Not too late to sign up, contact Fred at fschiffner@dccnet.com
Sat Oct 27, another wonderful Moveable Music Coffee House. As always, we’ll be at the Friends Meeting House, 1090 West 70th Avenue, one block west of Oak Street. Our feature for this evening will be the Artie Devlin Trio, featuring Artie Devlin on vocals, Jerry Silver on guitar, and Paul Bergman on bass. Combining a smooth, romantic vocal style with true jazz spirit and swing, the Artie Devlin Trio revisits jazz standards with charm and wit. This group's repertoire also includes Latin and Brazilian gems and 70's soul Jazz. We’ll start at 8 pm with a fabulous Open Stage. Our feature performers will begin at around 9:30. Admission is by $5 suggested donation, which goes to the Moveable Music School scholarship fund. Thanks Rosemary.
Mon Oct 29 is Open Stage night at your PBHS. Where else but at the Anza Club. Last Monday was the first time I stuck to the carpet. Real atmosphere in the ANZA.
Also Mon Oct 29, Bill Horowitz Band at &Loan in Nanaimo, see earlier emailout with Zula's sched attached.
Monday Nov 5, Rufus' Guitar Shop presents a workshop by Don Alder, the 2007 Winfield Fingerpicking Champion. What's Winfield, you ask? Officially, the Walnut Valley Festival, held each Sept in Winfield, Kansas. Also, the creme de la creme, the apex, the top o' the heap, of steel string fingerpickers (flatpickers too, and a few other instruments, but that's another story). And Don Alder is the top of the top. In other words, Don beat out 50 or so of the top fingerpickers in North America (and a few from around the world). And on Nov 5 he'll show you how he does it at Rufus' Guitar Shop. See the attachment. Thanks Chuck.

Congratulations to Blu Hopkins. The Shuswap songwriter/ performing artist and BC Bluegrass Workshop personality, along with wife Kelly Hopkins, was awarded the OMA(Okanagan Music Award) for Bluegrass Artist/Group of the year at an awards ceremony held October 10th 2007 at Kelowna's Community Theatre. An eight time nominee in categories as diverse as Male Performer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Folk Artist of the Year, Folk Roots Band of the Year, Bluegrass band of the Year, Album of the Year and others, this is Hopkins' first OMA. Blu has just released his third CD, a duo recording with Kelly titled "Homegrown". The new CD is a departure from his first two solo projects "Never Say Never" recorded at a Kamloops studio and "Canyon Wind" produced by Roy Forbes a.k.a. "Bim" at Vancouver's venerable Mushroom Studios. In response to many requests for a "live" CD, he says the recording is representative of the sound you'd get from "an evening sitting around the living room with a few friends, playing some of our favorite tunes." The project was recorded in the Hopkins' home studio with minimal overdubs as close to "live" as possible and features eight original cuts and four "cover" tunes. Blu & Kelly will be touring the CD this fall and winter around B.C. and Alberta and are currently booking next year,s tour schedule. A CD release party will be held in early November. *Blu **www.bluhopkins.com* <http://www.bluhopkins.com/
What else? Plan now for the River City Bluegrass Festival in Portland, first weekend after New Year's. And take the train from Bellingham and back. See the attachment, arrangements and info courtesy of Jay.
Cheers,
Garry
